How to Paint Indoor Furniture

Painting your furniture with Benjamin Moore paints can breathe new life into a room at a fraction of the cost of buying new furniture.

With the right preparation, high quality paint and the just-right paint colours, a makeover of your favorite piece is within reach. Repaint a dresser, chairs, a wooden bed frame or a battered coffee table, and your favorite painted wood furniture will enjoy a colourful second life.

We recommend our versatile Advance Interior Paint, which comes in our full colour range of 3,500+ colours.

Step #1: Pick Your Products

When painting any piece of furniture, achieving lasting results starts with choosing high-quality products.

Step #2: Dismantle and Clean

Remove any items and hardware, such as drawers and doors, to make your painting much easiser. Place all screws and hardware in a safe place and label them to ensure you put them back in the correct spot when you’re ready to reassemble the piece.

Next, cleaning - which is always critical for a successful paint project. Place a drop cloth under your furniture to catch any dust, debris or errant paint product. Use a detergent-type of cleaning product and damp rags to remove any contaminants, then use a damp cloth with clean water for a final wipe down. Be sure to let everything dry thoroughly.

Step #3: Tape

Use painter’s tape to cover any surfaces on your furniture that you don’t want to paint.

Step #4: Sand and Clean Again

It’s time to sand your furniture, especially if it has any kind of glossy finish.

We recommend using a medium 180- to 220-grit sandpaper to dull the surface. Do note it is not necessary to completely remove the existing coating if there is one.

Once sanding is done, it’s time to clean again. Vacuum up any sanding debris and wipe down with damp rags or a microfiber cloth.

Step #5: Prime

Apply an even coat of the selected primer to the top of the furniture first, then work your way downwards.

One coat should suffice - allow the primer to dry.

Step #6: Paint the First Coat

Once the primer is completely dry, use your roller or large paintbrush to apply Advance Interior Paint evenly to every surface. Switch to your smaller paintbrush to cover any details and smooth out your painted corners or edges.

Step #7: Let Dry and Repeat

Once the first coat is dry, repeat the painting process with a second coat of paint and allow the piece to dry completely before reassembling.
